Sheltie Information

Shelties were originally bred on the Shetland Islands, just north of Scotland.  These are the same islands that bred Shetland ponies, cattle and sheep.  Shelties are a combination of several older breeds—the “toonie” (town) dog which was an ancient breed kept to guard the sheep and protect the cottages, the smallest rough Collie (the Lassie type), the Border Collie, a spaniel, perhaps a Pomeranian.  Over many, many generations of selective breeding, the small, compact intelligent Sheltie emerged.

The Sheltie is relatively new to the United States. The first one brought to this country little resembled the ones in the show ring today.  Each breed of dog in the show ring is expected to conform to a “standard” that is carefully drawn up by those who are active in showing and breeding. It is a word picture of the perfect example of a given breed.  This standard is then accepted by the A.K.C.

The Sheltie Standard in the United States requires a height of not less than 13” at the shoulder, and not more than 16”.  The head should have a flat backskull, flat cheek planes, a definite “stop” or dip before the muzzle lengthens, and a well-rounded muzzle with a firm underjaw.  The ears should be placed high on the head and tipped forward; the neck should be arched, the body compact and sound, the gait smooth, the feet oval-shaped, and the tail carried low and at least one vertebrae past the hock joint.  The eyes should be dark, of medium size, and almond shaped, set obliquely in the skull.  The expression should be sweet and appealing. Shelties are naturally reserved around strangers, but should not be shy.  The coat should be double, with a thick, soft undercoat for insulation and a harsh outer coat that sheds water.

Shelties were bred to work - to herd sheep, guard cottages, serve as family watchdogs.  They are barkers, for that is how they did their job.
